Fightscorecollector's March Fight List
On Fightscorecollector in March i will be covering only 3 fights BUT i will also be covering 2 WHOLE BILLS. Starting my month Richard Abril and Sharif Bogere contest the vacant WBA 135lb Title with the winner moving on to bigger fights and bigger paydays. I then head across to Motherwell, Scotland to report on an 11 fight card promoted by Prospect boxing. The next night ageless warrior Bernard Hopkins goes after another world title as he challenges Tavoris Cloud in Brooklyn New York.
I'm London bound on Saturday the 16th as i will be reporting from the Wembley Arena as Frank Warren puts on a massive show headlined by the Lightweight unification match between Ricky Burns and Miguel Vasquez. All of the under card fights (10 in total) will have a fight report on this site. The month finishes with the rematch in what i think was fight of the year in 2012 - Brandon Rios vs Mike Alvarado from Las Vegas. A great way to end a busy month

The Tiger Can Now Name His Price

How much can Tony "The Tiger " Thompson make from his next fight?. Well Thompson can name his "Price" now after shocking the boxing world with a stunning Knockout of David Price at the Echo Arena in Liverpool. The second round one punch KO totally silenced what was once a loud crowd. Thousands of fans came to watch Price rise up the heavyweight rankings by beating his first ranked contender and for one and a half rounds it was all going to plan as Price carefully peppered Thompson with jabs and a fast straight right hand.
The first round started with both fighters having a look at each other before Price backed Thompson to the ropes landing a big right hand. Price continued to press the action and near the end of the round Thompson found himself backed in the opposite corner shipping more right hands followed by brutal body shots. Early in the second another one of these huge right hand seemed to have hurt Thompson as he lay on the ropes. Paul Smith working for Boxnation made a great point just before Thompson shocked the world. He said that Price to be careful and not walk into a shot as Thompson was looking to catch him coming in.
Well Smith was right as after 2.17 of the round Thompson landed a right hook round the side of Price's head. At first it didn't look that hard of a punch but the reaction of Price was shocking. He gave the impression of a man stuck in a big beanbag. His legs just wouldn't work and he couldn't get up. Finally he got to his feet but his legs were gone. Referee Steve Gray made the correct decision in ending the fight. The crowd went silent as Thompson went crazy shouting at the fans who booed the American national anthem.
Thompson will now sit back an listen to offers. Will he take a Price rematch? That fights makes sense as it can be made quickly. Another option is Tyson Fury who Thompson mentioned in his post fight interview. Will Fury's promoter Mick Hennessy burst the bank to get Fury the guy who Knocked out Price?. Thompson is the guy in charge here, that is his reward for this stunning upset.

No Hat Man Needed - Peterson Wins In 8

Fighting for the first time in fourteen months Lamont Peterson returned to defend his IBF Light Welterweight title in front of a home crowd as he beat up former champion Kendall Holt in eight rounds. Peterson's fans at the Armory Washington DC gave him a terrific reception welcoming home their fallen star after accusations of cheating with testosterone pellets against Amir Khan threatened to end his career. Holt was also coming off a long lay-off. The New Jersey mans last fight was eleven months ago as he blasted out Tim Coleman in two rounds. It was no surprise in the first round that both guys looked rusty. Hardly a blow was landed as they traded the odd jab and body shot.
The second round started better for Holt. The former WBO champion was getting his shots off quicker. Peterson began to stalk his challenger but all he did was walk into jabs followed by quick combinations to the body. Round three was also a close one as Peterson went back to boxing instead of going after Holt. Holt though land the better punches of the round as two very quick count right snapped the champions head back. On my card it was enough to win Holt the round.
In the fourth round Holt again started the better. He was picking off the champion who again followed Holt around the ring looking to land his bombs. Holt was being made to work as Peterson pressured him around the ring. That pressure paid off late in the round as a powerful jab, straight right floored Holt for the eight count. Luckily for Holt the bell saved him as Peterson went for the kill.
Peterson then went after Holt in the fifth like he did when he fought Amir Khan. He was now chasing Holt around the ring walking through anything Holt was throwing. Peterson's body shots were now beginning to take a huge toll on Holt as whenever he got tagged he grabbed the champion and it looked like he wouldn't let go. The champion continued his pressure in the sixth. It was clear he as targeting Holt's body as he continually backed Holt to the ropes and bashed away. Holt was fading here and it was no surprise that he took a knee late in the round after another multi punch barrage from the champion.
Holt came out boxing and moving in the seventh as the pace slowed, Holt looked good for the first two minutes of the round as he peppered the champion with the jab. It wasn't to last as again the body shots hurt Holt late in the round. Holt grabbed again as Peterson sensed he had this fight won.
The end of the fight came sudden as after 1.42 of eighth round Holt was trapped on the ropes shipping huge right hand after right hand. Referee Tony Weeks jumped in perfectly to end the fight. It was a good stoppage. Peterson will now look to fight the leading guys at 140. The fact that he is a Goldenboy fighter will make this easier. Holt in his interview on ESPN said he might call it a day.
Peterson earned $37,500, Holt $12,500

REES CANT SOLVE THE PROBLEM

WBC Lightweight Title - Adrien Broner vs Gavin Rees
In the early hours of Sunday morning UK time Gavin Rees attempted to cause a huge upset by taking Adrien Broners WBC 135lb title. For 2 Rounds that dream looked a reality as Rees outworked the talented Broner hitting the champion more than he has been used to in his last few fights. Broner making his 1st defence of the title he won against Mexican Antonio DeMarco stepped on the gas in the 3rd pot shotting the Welsh warrior as he tried to get close. It got worse for European champion in the 4th as a huge right uppercut floored Rees heavily in the first minute of the round. Rees showing all his warrior instincts got up and fought back but it was all becoming one way traffic. Even Rees trainer Gary Lockett was thinking of stopping the fight during the interval.
The end came late in the 5th as Lockett waved the white towel in defeat as Rees had been floored again this time by body punch coming off the break. He was shipping far too much punishment from the impressive Broner also. The Champion like many greats made the necessary adjustments to dominate his over matched foe. Rees though had won many fans in the States with his no nonsense attitude and his busy style.
The fans at the Atlantic City Boardwalk cheered for both fighters during the fight as at the beginning they couldn't believe this wee guy from Wales was taking the fight to his bigger stronger champion. In the 4th and 5th rounds the fans were cheering for Broner who was showcasing his supreme talent.
Broner will now move forward looking for that Ricky Burns fight. Its the biggest fight at 135lbs and will be for 3 belts if Ricky can get past the awkward Vasquez in March. Rees can come again, he didnt take a prolonged beating and can certainly get some decent fights at domestic and European level.

Slowey Wins Masters Title In A Thriller

Fighting in front of a raucous home crowd at the Gorbals Leisure Centre Glasgow. John Slowey produced his best performance of his career as he was made to work every minute of every round by tough guy Ian Bailey before winning the vacant featherweight British masters title. From the opening bell Bailey (8st 13lbs) came after Slowey head on. The Glasgow man used his southpaw right jab to keep a distance early along with some impressive upper body movement. It was Slowey's turn to start fast in the second as his jabs were now setting up some nicely placed hooks to the body. Bailey still came forward obviously able to walk through Slowey's (8st 13 1/4 lbs) lack of power. Round three saw Slowey battle more on the inside, both fighters were exchanging hooks inside. This round was closer as Bailey began to trap Slowey on the ropes. The pace was already crazy.
Bailey kept up the frantic pace in the fourth. The Slough man was coming off his best win of his career where he won the Southern Area Title against undefeated prospect Lewis Pettitt in nine rounds. Slowey though was matching his out-put. In fact Slowey was punching and landing more, keeping his aggressive opponent off him to put another round in the bag. The fifth round was the best of the fight for Slowey as he was able to land numerous combinations by creating more angles and staying off the ropes. This made the large Gorbals crowd raise the decibels just that little bit more. Slowey controlled the sixth until the last 30 seconds when a huge right hand forced him back into the corner. Bailey marauded forward banging away desperately trying to end the fight.
The last 30 seconds of the sixth had an impact on Slowey as in the seventh the Glaswegian went on the back foot boxing rings around Bailey. The jab was landing at will in this round as finally it looked as if Bailey was finally slowing down. WRONG. Bailey on my card won the eighth as he snapped Slowey's head back three times at the start of the round. It was all pressure, pressure, pressure as the Southern Area Champ who trapped Slowey in the corner time after time landing some hurtful body shots.
The ninth was manic. Both guys fitness can never be questioned as they stood toe to toe for most of the round. When one fighter land a decent punch, the other would respond. A truly wonderful round in which i couldn't split them. Nobody deserved to lose that round. At the start of the final round Slowey whipped the crowd into a frenzy as he thrust his hands in the air asking for more noise. There was no need as both guys flew at each other battering away keeping up the amazing pace set from round one. Near the end of the round a huge right hand from Bailey bloodied the nose of Slowey. It was the best punch of the round and probably won the round for the Slough man. What a war. When the final bell went the crowd went crazy. Slowey had surely won although every minute of every round was competitive. Referee Victor Loughlin scored the fight 97-74 to Slowey , The New British Masters Featherweight Champion.
Chief support saw Barlonock's Michael Roberts (9st 6lbs) win a tough 6x3s over Hayes Michael Stupart. Stupart 2-6-1 going in is better than advertised as he pushed Roberts all the way with his aggressive come forward style. Roberts started the fight well countering the on rushing Stupart (9st 6lbs) with some perfect check left hooks. Round two followed the same suit with Roberts catching Stupart coming in but also landing some quick jabs and straight rights. Stupart had a better third round as he began to push Roberts to the ropes landing more than a few right hooks inside. Roberts failure to work inside gave Stupart the edge as again Stupart was landing his favorite right hand with no response back.
In round four after an exchange that finished with a straight right from Roberts, Stupart came out with a cut left eye. This only spurred the Hayes man on as he continually pushed Roberts to the ropes outworking him and not letting Roberts establish his jab. The fourth must have woken up Roberts as in the fifth and sixth he returned to his smart boxing and moving setting Stupart up for those perfectly timed counters. It was enough to see Roberts to victory as Referee Kenny Pringle scored for the Barlonorock man 60-55. My card read 58-56.
Ryan Collins from Irvine scored his fourth win a pro by winning a technical decision over trial horse Youssef Al Hamidi of Dewsbury. This fight was stopped in the fourth and final round as a head clash opened a huge cut over Collins (9st 8 1/4 lbs) left eye. The previous three rounds saw Collins chase Al Hamidi (9st 10 3/4 lbs) around the ring landing little of note other than some bruising right hooks to the body. Al Hamidi is a slippery customer and I'm sure Collins who is only 19 learned a few new tricks from his opponent who has a who's who of British boxing on his record. Referee Ged Oneill scored the fight 39-37 for Collins who now improves to 4-0 1Ko.
Edinburgh Cruiserweight Stephen Simmons hit the canvas even before the fight started as he attempted a Chris Eubank style rope jump when entering the ring. Simmons foot got caught slamming the 200lb fighter knees first to the canvas. Luckily for Stephen he wasn't injured. Simmons (14st 6lbs) then made short work of Serbian import Jovan Kaludjerovic (14st 4 1/4 lbs) flooring him in the first round with a beautiful right hook , left hook body shot. Kaludjerovic got up but again was on the canvas as a clubbing right hand floored him for the second time. This time the bell saved the Serbian. Simmons continued his attack in the second by walking down his opponent finally landing the KO with a fast and powerful three punch combination punctuating with a perfect left hook to the body. Official time was 2.38 of the second round. Kenny Pringle officiated.
Popular Middleweight David Brophy registered his sixth win out of seven (one draw) with a dominant four round win over Doncasters James Tucker (12st 10lbs 9oz). Brophy of Caldercruix (12st 2lbs) looked composed throughout as he fought behind a solid left jab forcing Tucker to eat his straight right time after time. Brophy started the third round creating more angles for himself as Tucker began to walk forward a little bit more. The left hook to the body is Brophy's honey punch as he repeatedly set this up with lead rights. After four rounds Brophy easily won on Referee Ged Oneill's card 40-36. Onward and upward for the impressive Brophy who repeated the win he got on his debut vs Tucker.
Opening the Gorbals show Alexander (Zander) White scored a crowd pleasing four round decision over unbeaten Halifax fighter Richard Bitner. White (10st 5 1/4 lbs) marched forward from the opening bell landing his favourite looping right hand. Backed by quite a few followers White easily took the first two rounds pushing Bitner (10st 4lbs) around the ring. Bitner fought back in the third as "Zander" was caught coming in by a strong jab and right hand. The fourth was quite even until the man from Uddingston dug his heels in the final minute forcing Bitner back as he blasted away at the body to secure his sixth win in seven. Referee Ged Oneill scored the fight 40-36 Alexander White.

Brophy started the third round creating more angles for himself as Tucker began to walk forward a little bit more. The left hook to the body is Brophy's honey punch as he repeatedly set this up with lead rights. After four rounds Brophy easily won on Referee Ged Oneill's card 40-36. Onward and upward for the impressive Brophy who repeated the win he got on his debut vs Tucker.
Opening the Gorbals show Alexander (Zander) White scored a crowd pleasing four round decision over unbeaten Halifax fighter Richard Bitner. White (10st 5 1/4 lbs) marched forward from the opening bell landing his favourite looping right hand. Backed by quite a few followers White easily took the first two rounds pushing Bitner (10st 4lbs) around the ring. Bitner fought back in the third as "Zander" was caught coming in by a strong jab and right hand. The fourth was quite even until the man from Uddingston dug his heels in the final minute forcing Bitner back as he blasted away at the body to secure his sixth win in seven. Referee Ged Oneill scored the fight 40-36 Alexander White.

The Jackal Strikes In 9
Carl Frampton vs Kiko Martinez - European and IBF Intercontinental Super Bantamweight Titles

On a wild night at Belfast's Odyssey Arena. Carl Frampton gave the performance of his career as he ripped the European Super-Bantamweight title away from tough Spaniard Kiko Matinez after 9 pulsating rounds. Frampton known as "The Jackal" performed so calm as he was put under so much pressure from the experienced champion. Those first four rounds was probably Frampton's toughest of his career as he was continually on the back foot using his speed of hand and foot to keep Martinez off him.
At the weigh-in the previous day Martinez gave Frampton the old cut throat gestures obviously hoping to get under his younger opponents skin. What was impressive was the way Frampton (8st 9 1/2 lbs) never deviated from his fight plan when he was under that pressure. I wrote in my notes that Frampton was boxing like an experienced fight, in fact Juan Manuel Marquez like. Martinez (8st 9lbs) came out in the first like a madman going after the Irishman. Frampton boxed beautifully though as he was able to jab and move whilst blocking most of Martinez shots. The second was better for the Spaniard as his left hook was beginning to land to the body slowing Frampton down. Frampton was also being kept on the ropes that little bit longer. More than enough for the Martinez to win the round on my card.
The third and the fourth were also close rounds to score. Frampton on my card took the third as again he was able to get that gap needed to deliver his own hooks and uppercuts. Martinez rallied in the fouth and looked to have rocked Frampton slightly near the end of the round with a left hook. Great fight.
The pace of the fight had to slow at some point and in the fifth Martinez definitely slowed down a bit. The Jackal was landing more in this round and even stood in front of the champion out slugging him. To my surprise Martinez came back stronger in the sixth. It now looked liked Frampton was tiring. Martinez work rate was immense especially against a younger fresher fighter. Round seven saw Frampton fight inside again with Martinez, he took the fight to the champion, body punches began to land at will. Martinez still threw leather in response but it was a Frampton round.
Martinez seemed to get his second wind at the start of the eighth. Again he came out flying trying to land his bombs. Frampton again was on the move and covered up well. Late in the round a counter hook seemed to catch Martinez high on the head. For a brief second his legs didn't look stable but the old champion fired back in defiance.
When the fight came to the end it was sudden. After a great battle and with many press and fans having this fight close Frampton ended the fight with a perfect counter right as Martinez went straight at him. At this point in the fight two of the judges had Frampton ahead 78-74 and the other 77-75. I certainly agree with the latter. When Martinez hit the deck it looked as if he would get up. His legs betrayed him though as he fell back towards the ropes giving Finnish Ref Anssi Perajoki no choice in ending the fight.
Frampton will now move forward with Promoter Eddie Hearn mentioning a possible WBC or IBF title shot. Marinez i think would be a great opponent for Scott Quigg who was in the crowd to watch his 122lb rival.
